Many young people, often for reasons not of their own making, are failing to reach their potential at school and in society across the Caribbean. They need the support of a network of educators and a sustainable programme of activity to help them succeed.
The aim of Sport for Life! is to use the power of sport to change the lives of those children and young people for good through a combination of:
By encouraging young people to increase their levels of numeracy, literacy, IT, healthy lifestyle training and - in the first instance - cricket, we hope to improve their education experience and help them recognise the importance of participating in sport and healthy lifestyles.
We plan to put in place monitoring and evaluation programmes to ensure that Sport for Life! achieves the best possible results for young people throughout the Caribbean over a long period.
The Programme
Sport for Life! programmes are based at Test Cricket Grounds in the Caribbean. We target 10-16 year old boys and girls who are perhaps falling behind the national levels at school or in society generally. We also target talented young sportsmen and women who may need extra help with literacy and numeracy.
The programmes take place after school, at weekends and in school holidays and consist of between 2-5 hours of maths, English, ICT, healthy lifestyle training and cricket. Specialist teachers and coaches are sourced from the Education and Sports departments in each country and encouraged to motivate and inspire the young people as well as provide them with much needed help.
We have built learning centres that house state-of-the-art desktop computers, interactive whiteboards and classrooms to enable classes of young people to properly focus on specialist curriculums. We use the excellent cricketing facilities that Test Cricket Grounds have in place, including practice nets and in some cases indoor facilities to engage young people.
We have put in place bi-lateral partnerships, such as with Surrey County Cricket Club in the UK, to further motivate our young people and encourage active communication between them and professional players.
The Sport for Life! programmes in the Caribbean have received huge support, ranging from the private sector to celebrities and sport stars who lend their advice and experience to young people. Sporting stars such as David Hayes, WBA World Heavyweight Champion and Brian Lara, the former West Indies captain are only a few of a wide range of stars lending their knowledge and expertise to the programmes. How it works
Each Sport for Life! Learning Centre is named after key people or companies in the country who have made Sport for Life! possible:
Not for profit companies have been set up at each of the Learning Centres led by directors sourced from the top levels of sport, education and business sectors to achieve the highest levels of execution. These companies garner support from local bodies who support in kind, allowing for organic growth within the countries and integration within the community.
Although Sport for Life! has the full backing of governments we operate in, it isn’t reliant on local government funding. Our project managers Live Sport CIC in London, raise money through private and public trusts and foundations, individuals, the public sector including the British High Commission and private sector in both the Caribbean and the UK. They have been successful so far in identifying key sponsors and partners in Trinidad & Tobago, Atlantic LNG; Barbados, Cave Shepherd and St Lucia, British High Commission, Windward & Leeward Brewery and Sunswept Resorts. Microsoft Caribbean has provided software to all the IT centres.
